Pisa: the tower that was supposed to stand straight (oops)

 

Let's be honest: Pisa built one of the most famous monuments in the world… by getting the math wrong. The Leaning Tower started tilting during construction back in 1173, thanks to soft ground on one side — and instead of tearing it down, the locals basically shrugged and kept building anyway. The result: almost 900 years later, millions of tourists show up just to take history's most clichéd photo, the one where you "hold up" the tower with your hands. But Piazza dei Miracoli isn't just the Tower: the Cathedral and the Baptistery, all gleaming white and perfectly proportioned, create one of the most striking architectural backdrops in Italy. Fun fact: legend has it that inside this very Cathedral, a young Galileo Galilei watched a swinging chandelier and worked out the laws of the pendulum — the same tilting city that inspired pendulum physics. Probably too good a story to be entirely true, but it's the one everyone tells.

Lucca: the city that brags about staying intact (and earns it)

Lucca has a trick up its sleeve that few Tuscan towns can match: its Renaissance walls survived completely intact, whole, walkable — so intact that today people stroll or cycle right along the top of them, like an enormous elevated park wrapped around the entire old town. While other cities tore down their walls to expand, Lucca kept theirs and built an identity around them: the "city of 100 churches" (classic Tuscan exaggeration, though there really are a lot). But the real gem is Piazza dell'Anfiteatro: an elliptical square that traces the exact shape of a Roman amphitheater, because it's literally built right on top of one — the houses stand where spectators once sat. Fun fact: Lucca is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, and the composer's childhood home is still there, open to visitors, for anyone who wants to soak up the atmosphere that inspired La Bohème and Tosca.
